About The Bike
Known for its performance-focused approach to endurance bikes, the Cannondale Synapse has been the go-to for comfort-seeking cyclists that don’t want to sacrifice speed. This latest generation of the Synapse takes this same formula but gives it a modern twist. Packed full of features that’ll leave you thinking ‘why didn’t I have this sooner?’, this is the Swiss Army knife of road bikes – the glowing reviews speak for themselves! Let’s take a closer look:
Faster Than Ever
With the current crop of road bikes getting faster than ever, Cannondale took the opportunity to give the Synapse a speed upgrade. With a long history of aerodynamic innovation with their SuperSix Evo racing machine, SystemSix aero road bike and Slice TT weapon, it was important to implement their expertise without sacrificing Synapse’s trademark ride quality and comfort. The dropped seat stays and subtly tweaked tubing throughout have met the brief to a T, making this the fastest Synapse yet but still just as (if not more!) practical.
While we might be used to seeing performance features like these on fully-fledged race bikes, aerodynamics is just as important for endurance bikes. Even a small percentage performance improvement will add up when you’re out on the bike for hours on end – at the pointy end of a long endurance event, you’ll be happy to have that extra couple of km/h!
Cannondale’s tried-and-tested endurance geometry has remained largely unchanged, and that’s a good thing! However, what they have done is increase tyre clearance all the way up to 35mm (with plenty of room to spare), making it a seriously comfortable and capable all-round road bike that’ll even dabble in gravel. When it comes to ride quality, Cannondale hasn’t compromised!
SmartSense
One of the headline features of the Synapse 2 RL is the introduction of Cannondale’s new SmartSense, created in collaboration with Garmin utilising their Varia radar technology combined with integrated lighting from Lezyne.
This system includes a downtube-mounted battery for extended range and integrated lights front and rear, but the real magic happens with the Varia sensor that can be found attached to the saddle. Capable of detecting vehicles up to 140 metres back, it will display a warning and graphic on your head unit with colours signifying the speed at which they’re approaching.
Not only that, but the smart daytime-running lights are designed to adjust automatically according to lighting conditions and react to radar inputs to improve your visibility to other road users. These lights will even act as brake lights when slowing down – seriously impressive stuff!
Components
Rounding things out, the Synapse 2 RL comes equipped with Shimano’s trusty Ultegra 11-speed drivetrain. This high-performance groupset represents Shimano’s best shifting technology while still delivering year-round reliability, as well as a wide range of gears so that you’re ready for whatever the road throws at you – perfect for this versatile steed! Hydraulic disc brakes are the cherry on top, offering plenty of stopping power with easy modulation regardless of the weather.
Fulcrum Rapid Red 900 tubeless-ready aluminium wheelset fitted with 30mm Vittoria Rubino Pro G2.0 tyres make for a comfortable, smooth and reliable setup from the get-go. Whether it’s at the height of summer or the depths of winter, the Synapse 2 RL is a bike you can depend on.
